Keith Siddle

K oi so real that they look like they are going to swim right off the canvas... gorgeous Koi with championship conformation and pattern... Koi that you would just love to have swimming gracefully in your pond....

The Art of Keith Siddle realistically depicts Koi from different perspectives and, then, tempers and contrasts this realism with abstract colorful backgrounds.

A n admirer of the work of the Japanese artist, Hokusai, Keith focuses his own work on the power and grace of each Koi as complemented by the intensity of their collective colors and shapes and other effects found in a Koi pond. To create a three dimensional effect, Keith uses a heavy duty rag paper, layers the acrylic colors and hand embosses each scale – no doubt a tedious process which, nevertheless, produces a stunning effect. To create the abstract backgrounds, he uses the acrylic medium as a watercolor.

I nterested in the depiction of color and movement on canvas, Keith started out in 1984 at Maidstone Art College in England after which he joined the Retigraphic Society (now Pratt Contemporary Art) as an apprentice Fine Art Screen Printer.

I n 1988, Keith qualified as a Master Printer and, shortly thereafter, graduated to Studio Manager. He has worked with internationally renowned artists, such as Roni Wood of Rolling Stones fame. In 1992, Keith left Pratt to establish his own name, specializing in Koi Art. Since then, he has had a wealth of commissions, including the March 1995 issue of Koi CARP Magazine and the December 1995 cover of the British Koi Keeper's Society Magazine. He also designed and produced the art work for the 1997 Tetra/Second Nature Calendar.
